How to Improve Contact-Point Spacing With Repeatable Ball Feeds

Set the feed so every ball lands in the same spot at the same height and pace, then change one thing about yourself per set. A contact point has three parts: how high you strike the ball, how far it sits from your body, and how far in front of your front hip it is. A feed that varies moves all three at once, which is why spacing feels random on court and fixable on a machine. Make the impact point repeatable and the stroke often reorganizes itself without a single technical cue.

How to Set Up a Repeatable Ball Feed

One landing spot, one bounce height, one pace, one interval, one batch of balls.

  • Mark the landing spot with a cone so you can see the moment the feed drifts
  • Use a slow, looping arc rather than a flat drive. A higher trajectory gives more air time and a bounce that repeats, and it's the easiest ball shape for either a machine or a partner to reproduce
  • Hold one speed setting for the entire set
  • Set one interval, long enough that you arrive early rather than on time
  • Use one batch of balls in the same condition, since practice balls at different pressures bounce to different heights

Before you decide your distance is wrong, watch five balls land without hitting them and check that they land in the same place. Anything that varies in the feed shows up as a spacing error you never made.

The Three Parts of a Contact Point

Height, distance from your body, and distance in front. Each has a different cause and a different feed setting that isolates it.

Work on one part per set. If you shorten the interval while also moving the target, a change in your contact height and a change in your distance are indistinguishable in the results.

How Far From the Ball Should Your Contact Point Be?

An arm plus a racket. At contact the hitting arm is extended with the racket adding its length, the ball sits in front of your front hip, and your hips have rotated clear so the arm has room to swing through.

Extended is not locked. Full extension arrives just after contact rather than at it, so an arm that's already straight when the ball hits the strings is a reaching fault rather than good technique.

Most players are consistently one or the other, and the two fixes are opposite steps, so guessing wrong makes it worse. Hit ten balls off the fixed feed and look at where the marks cluster on the string bed before changing anything.

Footwork for Consistent Contact-Point Spacing

Small adjustment steps into position, then stop moving before the forward swing starts.

  • Move to the space you want to hit from, not to where the ball is. Those are different points, usually a foot or two apart, and running at the ball is what produces crowding
  • Complete the shoulder turn and takeback while you're still moving, so the only job left when the ball bounces is where the outside foot lands
  • Make the last adjustment a step, not an arm extension or a lean. If the arm is doing the spacing, the feet ran out of time
  • Land on a wide base and let the last two steps get shorter as you arrive
  • Don't lunge. A lunge is a step that arrives at the same moment as the ball, which leaves nothing to adjust with

Wide describes your base, not your distance from the ball. Standing farther away only helps if you're crowding. If you already reach, a wider gap makes the miss worse. Spacing is an output of footwork, not a stance you take, which is why it collapses first under time pressure.

Start at level zero. Move up a level only when you can hold the distance on eight of ten balls with the arm extended and your balance intact.

Each level adds exactly one variable. Jumping from a drop feed to random placement turns a spacing session into an ordinary hitting session, because there's no fixed reference left to compare against.

The Lane Drill

Put two cones about three feet apart, or use the doubles alley as a lane, and require the outside foot to land inside it on every ball. Constraining the foot constrains the distance, which is what golf coaches do with a barrier behind the strike area and what most tennis drills leave to feel.

The Deliberate Overrun

Move half a step too far toward the ball on purpose, then step back out to hit. The correction becomes available at speed rather than by accident.

Run each hitting level on the forehand first, then repeat it on the backhand.

Level 3 is where most of the work happens, and it's the level a hand feeder can't sustain. A person tossing 80 balls gets tired and the feed drifts. A ball machine delivers ball 80 the same way it delivered ball 1. A wall or rebounder does the opposite, returning whatever you gave it, so the feed varies exactly as much as your own shot does. That property is a flaw at level 3 and the point at level 5, which is why rallying against a tennis robot belongs at the top of the ladder rather than anywhere earlier.

Ball Machine Settings for a Repeatable Feed

One direction, one speed, one launch angle, one interval, held for the whole set.

  • Placement. A single target zone. Two zones belong at level 4, and anything wider is oscillation rather than spacing work
  • Launch angle. Fixed, and set high enough to produce the looping arc. Contact height determines how far from your body the ball has to be, so a bounce that wanders is a spacing target that wanders
  • Depth. Whatever combination of speed and angle you land on, don't change it mid-set. A ball landing three feet deeper arrives at a different height and pulls you to a different distance even with the direction unchanged
  • Interval. Long enough that your last adjustment is a step rather than a lunge. Around six seconds suits most players, and the trade-offs are covered in feed interval and recovery-based feeding
  • Machine position. Fixed for the whole block, since where the machine sits sets the incoming angle

Surface changes the target before you touch a dial. A clay bounce sits higher than a fast hard court at the same setting, so switching surfaces moves your contact height and therefore your distance.

How to Tell if Your Spacing Improved

Film from the side, not from behind the baseline.

A camera behind you shows swing path and net clearance, which is the standard angle for stroke work. It cannot show the gap between your body and the ball, which is the only thing this session is about. Put the phone at the net post or on the sideline, level with where you make contact, and the distance is obvious in a single frame.

Three things to count:

  • Extension. Out of ten balls, how many had the elbow moving forward rather than jammed or locked
  • Contact spread. Where the marks cluster on the string bed, checked at the start and end of the block
  • Depth scatter. Inconsistent contact points produce scattered depth even when direction is fine, so a landing map that tightens up is evidence the spacing did too

Four Faults That Look Like Bad Spacing

Late preparation, late ball tracking, standing still, and a recent grip change all produce the same symptoms, and none of them respond to spacing work.

  • Late preparation. If the racket is still in front of you when the ball bounces, the arm is doing the spacing because the feet ran out of time
  • Tracking the ball to the bounce instead of into the strings. Losing sight of it over the last few feet produces mistimed contact that looks like bad distance
  • Standing still, then moving. Spacing is produced by continuous small steps. A player who watches and then jumps will never find a consistent distance
  • A recent grip change. An Eastern and a Semi-Western forehand meet the ball at different points, so changing grips moves the target. If your distance broke down right after a grip change, that's the cause

The first two are hard to see from behind your own racket, which is the kind of thing a coach spots in a few minutes of watching.

Contact-Point Spacing FAQs

Is contact-point spacing different on a one-handed and two-handed backhand?

Yes. A one-hander meets the ball farther in front and farther from the body, since the arm has to extend fully. A two-hander contacts closer in, with less reach available and a smaller margin for reaching.

Should I fix my spacing or my preparation first?

Preparation. If the racket isn't back before the ball bounces, the arm has to do the spacing no matter where your feet are, so distance work won't hold until the takeback is early enough.

How long does it take to fix spacing?

Expect four to six sessions before it holds at match pace, and longer if it's tied to late preparation. The change usually shows first in drop feeds, then in fixed machine feeds, and last in rallies.

Why do I still shank balls when my spacing feels right?

Shanks off the top or bottom of the hoop are vertical misses, not distance misses. They usually come from tracking the ball late or from a racket face that changes angle through contact, neither of which spacing drills address.
