Work the four in order and do not move on until the current one holds. Contact first, then direction, then depth, then recovery. Most forehand sessions fail because all four get worked at once: someone hits a heavy crosscourt ball on the run while the contact point is still moving around, and the machine repeats the mistake for the rest of the session. A machine does not fix a forehand. It holds every variable still except the one you are working on, which is what makes a change measurable.

Stages 1 through 3 all run on a single fixed feed. If the ball changes while you are changing your swing, you cannot tell which change produced the result. Only stage 4 needs the machine to change placement, which is what oscillation does.

Hit each set as two blocks of 10 with a 15-second pause rather than 20 unbroken balls. Forehand quality falls off across a long unbroken run, and the tired reps at the end are the ones that teach the wrong pattern.

Treat the speeds as a starting point and calibrate on your first session: find the setting where a centered feed lands just past the service line at a pace you can rally with, then write that number down.

Two Forehand Faults a Fixed Feed Creates

A late unit turn and lost spacing. Both come from knowing where the ball is going, and both decay quietly because the shots keep landing in.

The unit turn drifts late. On a live ball the turn is triggered by recognizing which wing the ball is coming to. A fixed forehand feed removes the recognition, the trigger goes with it, and the turn creeps later every ball until you are taking the racket back as the ball bounces. Trigger the turn on the launch instead, and have it complete before the ball bounces on your side.

The adjustment steps disappear, and spacing goes with them. The last two or three small steps before contact are what set the distance between your body and the ball. They are the least glamorous part of footwork and the first thing a fixed feed lets you drop, because you can stand still and reach, and the shots still go in. What you have grooved is a forehand that works at one exact spacing. Take two adjusting steps on every ball even when you do not need them.

The first two rows are the common ones, and in both cases the fix runs against instinct. Balls flying long is a trajectory problem you fix with spin and net clearance, not by swinging softer or aiming lower. No pace despite a fast swing is a sequencing problem, and swinging harder makes it worse.

Stage 1: Forehand Contact Point Drills

The contact point belongs out in front of your lead hip, with the arm extended and the elbow soft rather than locked. Everything in this stage exists to make that point repeat.

Height depends on your grip. An eastern forehand wants the ball around waist to chest, while a semi-western is built to strike higher, roughly hip to shoulder, which is why one feed height does not suit both grips. Surface shifts it again, since a ball off clay sits up higher than the same ball off a fast hard court. The practical test is whether you can see contact happen without turning your head. If the ball reaches your lead hip before you strike it, you are late.

Set one fixed placement to your forehand, 30 to 35 mph, no spin or light topspin, and a 7-second interval. The long gap gives you time to set your feet, hit, and register where the racket met the ball before the next one arrives.

Stationary Finish

Hit the ball and do not move your feet again until the swing has finished. A forehand that feels rushed is usually struck while the body is still traveling, and you cannot push against the ground while you are still moving over it, so the legs never drive the hip rotation. Freezing the finish tells you whether you were balanced at contact.

Racket Lag Check

Take the racket back, pause where the racket head has dropped below the ball with the butt cap pointing toward it, then complete the swing. Ten of these before each live block. Racket head speed comes from that lag releasing as the arm decelerates, not from pulling the arm through faster, which is why a fast-looking swing can produce a slow ball.

Spacing Reset

Start each ball deliberately one step too close, then one step too far, alternating, and use the adjustment steps to arrive at the same contact distance both times. Being jammed and reaching produce the same symptom, a cramped arm and a shortened follow-through, and both are spacing faults rather than swing faults.

Stage 2: Crosscourt and Inside-Out Forehand Drills

Four targets off one feed that never changes. Direction comes from how far your shoulders rotate through the ball, not from steering with the wrist, so point the follow-through at the target and let the swing stay the same.

Keep the stage 1 placement and raise the speed to 35 to 40 mph on a 6-second interval.

Deep Crosscourt Forehand

Twenty balls, all crosscourt, into the half of the court on your diagonal. Crosscourt is the higher-percentage direction for a measurable reason: the diagonal of a singles court runs about 82 feet against 78 feet down the line, and the net is 3 feet at the center against 3 feet 6 inches at the posts. That is about four and a half more feet of court and six inches less net.

Short Angle Crosscourt

Same feed, but aim inside the service box on the diagonal instead of deep. This one needs noticeably more topspin, because the ball has to fall inside a much shorter distance, which means a steeper low-to-high racket path rather than a harder swing. Run it as 10 balls rather than 20, and expect a lower count than on any other target here.

Down the Line

Same feed, all 20 down the line. Expect the number to drop. You are redirecting the ball across less court and over a higher part of the net, and you rotate less through contact, which is why down the line is a shot you choose rather than one you default to.

Inside-Out and Inside-In

Move the placement to your backhand corner and run around every ball. Hit three inside out, crosscourt to the far corner, then the fourth inside in, down the line. The pattern only works if the first three look identical, and a machine trains that better than a partner because the feed lands in the same place every time while you sort out the footwork to get around it.

Clear this stage at 15 of 20 to the target you called, both crosscourt and down the line.

Stage 3: Forehand Depth Drills

Depth is a function of net clearance and spin rate, not swing speed. Raise the speed to 40 to 45 mph, add clear topspin, and shorten the interval to 5 seconds.

Depth Count

Count only the balls landing past the service line, the back 18 feet of the far side. The line is your marker, so you need no extra equipment. Aim 3 to 5 feet over the net. The count only means anything if the balls match, since a hopper mixing new and dead practice balls scatters depth by several feet on its own.

The Height Fix for Long Balls

If your forehands are flying long, add topspin and aim higher over the net rather than lower. A flat ball has almost no margin: it either clears the net or lands beyond the baseline, and the gap between those two outcomes is a very small change in racket angle. The same ball with spin and 5 feet of clearance falls inside the baseline on its own. Aiming lower is the instinct, and it trades long errors for net errors instead of changing the shape of the shot.

Short Ball Depth

Set the placement to land near the service line. Short balls get dumped into the net because a late contact on a dropping ball is a low contact, and a low contact forces a steeper upward racket path that costs you the forward component of the swing. Step in and take it on the rise, and the same swing strikes it higher and drives it deeper.

Stage 4: Forehand Recovery Drills

The recovery you are training starts from the outside leg that loaded at contact, not from general court movement. Set two placements at 40 to 45 mph on a 4 to 5 second interval, and put a cone just off the center mark.

Load and Push

On a wide forehand the outside leg loads at contact and then pushes you back toward the middle. It is the same leg doing both jobs, which is why an open-stance forehand recovers faster than a closed one: the leg is already loaded under you rather than committed forward. Hit the ball, feel the push off that leg, and let it start the recovery before the follow-through finishes.

Cone Recovery

Touch the cone between every ball. Miss the cone and the shot does not count, however clean it was. This drill exposes whether stages 1 through 3 were real, because a contact point that only exists when you are standing still will not survive a match.

Recover Behind the Baseline

Recover to a step behind the baseline rather than onto it. Recovering onto the line leaves you nowhere to go when the next ball lands deep, and it is why players get jammed on the second forehand of a rally rather than the first.

If you cannot make the cone before the next launch, add a second to the interval rather than cutting the recovery short. Machines that use recovery-based feeding hold the next ball until you are back, which removes the timing decision.

Clear this stage when you reach the cone before every launch and the last five balls are as clean as the first five.

How to Track Your Forehand Across Sessions

Repeat the same 20-ball set at the same settings every session and track one number per stage. Four numbers is the whole record, and it works because the feed is identical every time.

One session covers one or two stages, not four. Run stage 1 as a warm-up every time even after you clear it, because the contact point is the stage that quietly drifts. Once you have three or four sessions logged, they slot into a weekly tennis training plan alongside match play.

Should I work my backhand in the same session?
