A ball struck at 60 mph covers about 88 feet per second, and the baselines are 78 feet apart, so it arrives in a little under a second. Why Shortening the Interval Is the Last Thing to Change

Shortening the interval compresses every part of the shot at once, and the compression isn't shared evenly.

Five things have to fit in the gap: reading the ball, deciding where to hit it, moving, setting up, and swinging. When the gap shrinks, the swing is the part that survives, because you have to hit the ball. Preparation and positioning absorb the cut instead. The first thing a shorter interval produces is the same swing made from progressively worse positions.

Then the swing shortens too. That's the ordinary speed-accuracy tradeoff, and in a groundstroke it shows up as a smaller backswing, less trunk rotation, and arms doing the work the legs were doing. Those are efficient responses to not having enough time. They're also exactly what you'd hire a coach to fix.

The trouble is that they get practiced. A repetition of a compensated pattern is still a repetition, so a session at an interval you can't handle makes the compensation more automatic rather than exposing it. Watch a pro practice session and the rally pace stays well under match intensity, with full recovery between balls, for most of the session.

A faster feed does train real things: first-step speed, decisions under time pressure, and work capacity. It trains them properly once the pattern being compressed is already stable at a slower rate.

That's why interval sits at the top of the difficulty ladder rather than the bottom. Add difficulty in this order:

  1. Target variety. Same feed, more places you have to put the ball.
  2. Pattern width. Same interval, more court to cover.
  3. Ball speed and depth. Less time to prepare, same distance to travel.
  4. Interval. Less time and less recovery, on top of everything above.

Each of the first three compresses one thing. The interval compresses all of them, which makes it the last dial to touch and the first one to back off when form breaks.

What Changes the Right Feed Rate for You

Pattern width, ball speed, surface, ball condition, fatigue, and shot type each move the interval, and together they can swing it by two seconds or more.

How far you're being moved. A fixed feed to one spot needs far less time than a wide two-line pattern that sends you corner to corner. Widen the pattern and the interval grows with it.

Incoming speed and depth. A faster, deeper ball eats your preparation time before the interval matters at all. Raise ball speed and shorten the interval in the same session and you won't know which one broke your form.

Surface. A clay bounce sits up and slows the ball, which buys time; a hard court takes it back. The same setting plays differently across hard courts, clay, and grass.

Ball condition. Practice balls that have lost pressure fly flatter and bounce lower, so a batch that felt right at 4 seconds can feel rushed a month later with nothing else changed.

How you feel that day. The interval that works in the first 20 balls isn't always the one that works in the last 20. Set it for the end of the set.

Juniors often need the slow end even when their strokes look clean, because their positioning decisions are still slow and the interval has to cover the decision as well as the swing. Signs Your Feed Rate Is Wrong

Missing late, with the ball ending up behind you, is the clearest sign the feed is too fast. Standing still between balls is the clearest sign it's too slow.

How to Convert a Feed Dial Number Into Seconds

Time it. Set the dial, start a stopwatch on the first ball, count ten more, and divide the elapsed time by ten. Write the result next to each dial position once and you never have to guess again.

This matters because many machines number the feed control 1 to 10 with no units, and the direction isn't standard: on some a higher number means a longer gap, on others a shorter one. That inversion makes a machine look stuck at an unusably fast rate when the dial is simply reading backward. On battery-powered machines the real interval can also drift as the charge drops, so a setting timed at full battery isn't what you're getting an hour later. How to Calibrate Your Feed Rate in One Session

Collecting 100 or so balls takes most people 5 to 8 minutes. At a 2-second feed you spend more of the hour collecting than hitting. Two fixes: run fast intervals as short sets inside a longer moderate block, or work with a bigger hopper.

Three Rhythm Drills and the Interval Each One Needs

Metronome set. Fix the interval at 4 seconds, feed 25 balls to one spot, hit every one to the same target, and count how many land in. This is the benchmark you compare everything else against week to week.

Recovery ladder. Start at 5.5 seconds and cut half a second every 10 balls. Stop at the interval where you stop taking a recovery step back toward the middle. That's your current ceiling, and it's usually a second or more slower than people guess.
