Indoor ball machine work needs three changes to your outdoor setup. Take about 5 mph off the speed, cap the launch angle at whatever the ceiling allows, and build the session to fit a booked hour instead of an open afternoon. Make those three changes and every feed comes out identical, which is what makes an indoor session worth measuring.

How to Adjust Ball Machine Settings for an Indoor Court

Run the ceiling test before anything else. Set the launch angle you plan to use, feed three balls, and watch where they peak against the roof structure, the light fixtures, and any hanging curtain. If a ball comes close, drop the angle one step and test again. Clearances vary from building to building, so repeat this anywhere new.

Then calibrate speed on site. Find the setting where a centered feed lands consistently just past the service line at a pace you can rally with, call that your working speed, and write it down for that building. Warm-up sits two steps below it and the finishing block one step above.

Three fixes cover most of what goes wrong indoors. If the ball skids through and rushes you, add spin before you cut speed. If your depth falls short, raise the launch angle one step rather than adding pace. If you are late on every ball, add a second to the interval.

Fast feeds are the one setting to treat carefully. A 2 to 3 second interval works as conditioning, but it leaves no time to reset your feet between balls, so nothing technical gets fixed at that rate. Keep it in the last block.

These numbers assume a full-size court. Short courts and gym floors need a different ball, covered below.

Where to Position the Ball Machine on an Indoor Court

Center of the far baseline is the default. Four adjustments cover the rest.

Corner placement. Angling the machine into a corner and feeding on the diagonal produces a crosscourt pattern with no oscillation, which is the cheapest way to add variety on a fixed-feed machine. Move it once per block at most, since each trip across the court costs 30 to 45 seconds of paid time.

Runback. Many indoor courts have less than the 21 feet behind the baseline that ITF standards call for on competitive courts. If you are hitting off the back curtain, move the machine two feet inside its own baseline rather than fighting for room behind yours.

Targets. Put a cone or a ball can in each deep corner, roughly 3 feet inside the baseline and 3 feet inside the sideline. Curtains and walls remove the depth cues you normally read off a fence line, so the markers do more work indoors than out.

Phone. Set it on a side fence post and record. Indoor light is even with no sun glare, so the footage comes out usable without fiddling. Film from the side for contact point and from behind the baseline for depth.

Stay clear of the feed port whenever the machine is powered on, and keep at least 7 feet between you and any robot that drives itself around the court once it starts.

If Your Machine Uses Cameras

Vision-based machines track better indoors, because there is no sun and no backlight. Dim buildings are the indoor failure case, since tracking degrades in low light.

Two things to check. Clear anything yellow and round from the machine's field of view, since indoor courts collect equipment carts, cones, and signage along the side curtain. And any mode that positions the robot by reading court lines needs a standard full-size marked court. Crosscourt Depth

Feed one deep placement to your forehand and hit two reps of 12 crosscourt into the marked corner, then one rep of 12 down the line before switching the placement to your backhand. That order gives you one machine change per wing instead of four. The standard to clear is 8 of 12 into the target zone on each side.

Two-Line Side to Side

Alternate wide forehand and wide backhand, and recover toward the center mark before the next ball arrives. On a fixed-feed machine, keep the feed centered and start every ball with a touch of the singles sideline, alternating sides. The standard here is positional: back within one step of the center mark before each feed.

Short and Deep

Alternate a short ball inside the service line with a deep ball near the baseline. Hit an approach off the short one, then recover behind the baseline for the deep one. Moving forward and back is harder than moving side to side, because you have to stop and change direction against your own momentum.

On the Rise

Stand two feet inside the baseline, take the ball early off a fast low feed, and shorten your backswing until contact is clean on every ball. A gust outdoors turns a rising ball into a guess, which is why this drill belongs indoors. If you are getting jammed, drop 5 mph rather than backing up.

Lobs and overheads are the two to leave out unless the ceiling test came back clean.

A 45-Minute Indoor Session Inside a One-Hour Booking

Call the club before you book and confirm four things: whether machines are allowed and on which courts, whether the club rents one, whether the court is full size, and whether you use house balls. Machine policy varies more than anything else at a tennis facility, and finding out at the front desk costs you the first ten minutes of a paid hour.

Once you are on court, a 60-minute booking gives you roughly 45 minutes of training. Setup takes five minutes and packing out takes ten if you want to leave on time.

That comes to about 290 balls, four hopper loads on an 80-ball machine, and roughly 24 minutes with the ball in play. The remaining time goes to rests between reps, three refills, and two setting changes.

Rest 20 seconds between reps in the first two blocks and 30 seconds in the last two. Quality drops inside a long unbroken block, and 40 tired balls in a row buy you nothing on a court you are paying for by the hour.

Running the Session on a Short Court or in a Gym

Change the ball rather than the machine settings. Cutting speed does not lower the bounce, and bounce height is what a small space cannot absorb.

Short Courts at 60 and 36 Feet

Some clubs run these for junior programs, and a machine set for a full court will send every ball long. Switch to orange on 60 feet and red on 36, drop the launch angle to its lowest setting, and run crosscourt depth and two-line only. Skip short and deep, since there is not enough court to make the forward recovery meaningful.

Gyms and Other Non-Court Spaces

Bounce a ball ten times before you unpack anything. Carpet and uneven floors change the bounce enough that your targets stop meaning anything, and a slick gym floor turns a hard recovery step into a fall. If the floor passes, use orange or red balls, tape a service line, and treat the session as contact and timing work.

Winter Tennis Training and Moving Back Outdoors

Across a full indoor season the constant feed becomes a benchmark, and that same consistency creates one problem when you go back outside.

Run the identical session from this article in the first week of every month, with the same speed, targets, and intervals, and the change in your numbers is a change in your game. Outdoors that comparison never holds, because a target hit rate is partly a measure of the breeze that day.

Calibration is what you lose. After a season of identical feeds and a consistent bounce, your first outdoor session will feel wrong. Add back the 5 mph you took off for indoor pace, raise the launch angle a step to restore net clearance in wind, and widen your target zone by about a racket length for the first two outdoor sessions. Compare yourself against your last outdoor session rather than your best indoor one.
