Six settings control the difficulty of any robot drill. Each has a sensible step size, and each breaks something different when you push it too far.

Step size matters as much as the one-variable rule. A 10 mph jump or a two-second cut to the interval turns the drill into a different drill, and you learn nothing about the change you made.
Which Variable to Change First
Work down the table in the order it is written. The order sorts the six by a single question: what does the change take away from you?
1. Placement and Depth
These cost you distance and nothing else. You travel farther while the flight time of each ball stays the same, so your preparation window survives intact. They are the safest first steps and the ones most players skip in favor of raising speed.
2. Spin
Spin costs you an adjustment, not time. It asks you to do something different with the racket in the same window, so the stroke stays whole even while the shot gets harder.
3. Feed Interval
A shorter interval costs you the reset between balls without touching the ball itself, so each individual swing still has its full window. If your robot supports recovery-based feeding, this variable behaves differently, since the next ball waits for you rather than for the clock.
4. Speed
Speed is the first change that reaches inside the stroke, because taking flight time away shortens every phase of the swing at once. It also compounds with the interval: a faster ball shortens the gap between your contact and the next launch even when the interval setting has not moved.
5. Predictability
This one costs you the cue that starts your preparation. On a fixed feed you know which wing is coming, so the turn happens on the launch. Make the feed unpredictable and the turn has to wait for recognition, which is the hardest step and the only one that carries straight over to a match.
The order also describes an arc across a season. A drill sitting at the top of it stops looking like a feed and starts looking like a point.
When to Progress the Drill and When to Back Off

Deliver the 20 as two sets of 10 with 60 to 90 seconds between them. A set much longer than a dozen balls starts scoring your fitness rather than your skill, and the number stops describing what you were testing. A target of 16 out of 20 is a common single figure and sits at the top of the hold band.
The band exists because the difficulty that produces your best practice score is not the difficulty that produces the most learning. Guadagnoli and Lee's challenge point framework describes the trade directly: raising task difficulty increases what there is to learn from an attempt while decreasing how well you perform it, and the useful setting sits where those two meet. A drill you win 19 times out of 20 has stopped giving you information. One you win 8 times out of 20 gives you more than you can use.
Three things keep the score honest. Set the target before you feed the first ball, not after you see where the balls are going. Score the same 20 balls at the same settings every time, because a number you cannot compare is not a measurement. And use matched balls, since a hopper mixing new and dead practice balls scatters depth by several feet on its own and will move your score more than a one-step change does.

A Six-Session Progression Example
Here is the system applied to one drill, a deep crosscourt forehand, starting from 40 mph, light topspin, a 5-second interval, and one fixed placement to the forehand side. The target is the deep half of the crosscourt court.

Session 5 is the part most progressions leave out. Backing off is the system working. The depth change moved the drill past your level, so it comes out and something smaller goes in. By session 6 you have made two real changes in six sessions, which sounds slow until you compare it to changing four settings at once and never knowing which one mattered.
Six sessions in, the drill is measurably harder and your stroke has not changed. That is the outcome you are looking for.
What Your Machine Needs to Run This
The step-size discipline asks more of the hardware than the drills themselves do, and most machines run out before the player does.
A fixed-head portable tennis ball machine handles speed, spin, depth, and interval. What it cannot do is change placement inside a drill, since moving the target means moving the machine, so you get one placement per block and no unpredictability at all.
An oscillating machine adds placement variation and a random sweep. What it usually will not give you is a target moved 3 feet and nothing else, because a sweep is a range rather than a set of points.

How to Move From a Predictable Feed to a Random One
Take the last variable in four steps, and expect your score to fall on the final one.
- One fixed placement.
- Two placements alternating in a known order.
- Three or four placements in a set sequence, which needs programmable control rather than a simple sweep.
- The same placements in random order, or a random sweep across a zone, which is what oscillation gives you on most machines.
Step 3 is where a drill starts to resemble a point, so build sequences that exist in matches. Two worth programming: two deep crosscourt rally balls followed by a short ball you attack, and a deep ball, a short ball to approach on, then two volley-height feeds.
Your number will drop several balls at step 4, and it should. That drop is the price of transfer: the practice scores a predictable feed produces are the least transferable ones you can generate. The score band still applies, you just apply it to the new format instead of comparing it to the old one.
The practical compromise is to keep the technical block predictable and finish every session with one random block of 20. Log both numbers separately. The first tells you whether your stroke is improving, the second tells you whether you can use it.
When Settings Stop Working, Change the Scoring
The scoring format is the one difficulty lever that is not a machine setting, which makes it the move when you have run out of settings or when you need pressure without more physical load.
Three formats, in rising order of difficulty at identical settings:
- Out of 20. The default. One miss costs one point and nothing else.
- Consecutive count. Land 8 in a row in the target. A single miss resets you to zero, which changes how the ninth ball feels.
- Race to four. Play until you hit four clean targets or four errors, whichever comes first. Losing the race means running it again.
Consecutive and race formats add match pressure without adding speed, spin, or distance, so they work on days when your legs are done or when you are coming back from a layoff and do not want the physical step up. Can I change a variable in the middle of a session?
No, or the score stops meaning anything. Half a block at one setting and half at another gives you a number that describes neither. Finish the 20, write it down, and make the change before the next session.
What should I do if no change makes the drill work?
Back off two steps rather than one and film a block. A plateau that survives a setting change is usually a technique problem wearing a difficulty problem's clothes, and no amount of tuning will move it.
Do beginners follow the same order?
The same order, but only the first two variables for the first few months. Widen the placement and lengthen the interval, and leave speed and spin exactly where they are until you can clear the band on both wings.
How many changes should I stack before resetting?
Write down your original setting and return to it every couple of months. After five or six stacked changes you no longer know which one is carrying the difficulty, and rerunning the baseline tells you how much you actually gained.
